All Natural House Cleaning Ideas for the All Natural Mama

By Kara Reynolds | Sep 22, 2017

In the quest to banish toxic chemicals from home, all natural mamas are turning to cleaning supplies made in the home with natural ingredients. Many of these items come right from your pantry, including baking soda and vinegar — just like the volcano science experiment in school. Using homemade natural recipes to clean your house doesn’t involve hours of hands-on scrubbing. These 14 all natural house cleaning ideas will save you time and money, minus the health risks:

Baking Soda Oven Cleaner

Make a paste of water and baking soda to naturally clean your oven without noxious chemicals or the self-cleaning cycle that doesn’t seem to clean anything. Leave the baking soda paste overnight and wipe it away the next day.

Trust in Microfiber

Instead of wasting resources, switch to microfiber and use a microfiber mop and microfiber cloths to clean your entire house, including mirrors, dishes and more. You don’t need chemicals, plus they’re inexpensive and antibacterial. To make cleaning easy, give each room in your home a color and use cloths of those colors to clean them.

Scouring Powder for Scum

The soap scum that builds up on showers and tubs is hard to get rid of, but all natural cleaners can help. Ditch the store-bought product and make your own anti-scum scouring powder by combining one part borax, two parts baking soda and one part salt. Then, scour the scum away!

Citrus-Infused Vinegar

Place citrus peels in a mason jar and then pour white vinegar over the top. Leave them for a couple of days or two weeks at most to infuse. When ready, strain the vinegar out to use as a natural cleaner with a pleasant citrus smell, or quickly infuse the vinegar on the stovetop. Dilute and use as a window cleaner or disinfectant for kitchen counters.

Natural Stain Treatment Cheat Sheet

Some of the most toxic chemicals hide out in stain treaters and laundry soaps. There are natural alternatives that get the job done, but various stains require different treatments. Wellness Mama uses a chemistry reference sheet by her washer to tackle stains. Just post it nearby, and you can treat stains naturally, quickly and successfully.

No Hassle Dishwasher Cleaning

Dishwashers have too many nooks and crannies to scrub, and self-cleaning features don’t always clean thoroughly. For a no-hassle cleaning solution, fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with two cups of vinegar. Place it on the top rack and run the hot cycle without other dishes. This will clean the dishwasher and remove lingering odors.

Garbage Disposal Cleanse

The garbage disposal gains a particularly lovely bouquet of fragrances for the nose to sample over time. Conduct a garbage disposal cleanse by slicing a lemon or other citrus fruit down the middle and tossing half down the garbage disposal with the water on for ten seconds or longer. Alternatively, go the route of the school volcano experiment. Fill the garbage disposal with a half cup of baking soda and add a cup of vinegar. Let your volcano brew for ten minutes, and then turn on the water and the disposal.

Urine Stain Remover

Ah, the joys of potty training children and pets! If struggling to remove urine smells and stains from surfaces like a mattress, all you need to use is dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to scrub it out. Mix ten ounces of hydrogen peroxide with three tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl (since it may foam) and add a few drops of your preferred dish soap. Fill up a spray bottle, spray the affected area and let it sit for an hour. It should disappear, taking the urine smells with it.

Showerhead Soak

Do you use a shower cap? Your showerhead should. Let the shower head soak in a plastic bag filled with white vinegar for as long as 12 hours. Carefully remove and pour the contents down the drain. You’ll have no more residue from hard water.

Car Seat Stains

Beat stubborn car seat upholstery stains with club soda, baking soda and Dawn. Combine one cup each of all three in a spray bottle and spray the stains. Leave the liquid mix on there for five to ten minutes then scrub it out.

Toilet Soak

Fill a cup with baking soda and dump it in the toilet. Let the baking soda soak for an hour and then pour in a cup of white vinegar. Leave that for five minutes and then flush it away. Volcano science experiment wins again. If the toilet is extra dirty, you’ll need to scrub too.

Stove Vent Fan Filter Cleaner

You clean the oven and the stovetop, but what about the stove vent filter? Imagine all the buildup in there. Here’s what you do. Set a big soup pot to boil and slowly add half a cup of baking soda. Submerge the filter until the grease comes off and rinse until clear.

Streak-Free Glass

Most are familiar with using vinegar and water to clean windows, mirrors and other glass surfaces, but the secret to streak-free glass is to use newspaper instead of paper towels. Just be sure to wear gloves to avoid getting ink on your hands. By making your products by hand, you know exactly where the ingredients are sourced — from your pantry. Don’t worry any longer about toxic chemicals on labels that claim to get the job done faster. All natural mamas deserve better — natural products made with attention and care right at home.
