Sometimes, people get in a bad or sad mood. It happens to nearly everyone. Life isn’t always easy — there are trials and tribulations that sometimes have a cause and, other times, don’t. When this happens, all that people want to do is feel better, but might not know how. 

Fortunately, there are several ways to enhance mood, whether natural or through treatments and medication from a doctor. While treatments are necessary sometimes, especially for prolonged depressive moods, sometimes all people need is a quick fix to their sadness.

Here are eight tips to boost your mood in no time. 

1. Bring in Natural Light

Sunshine is one of the most natural and effective ways to boost moods. Natural light brings up serotonin levels, which is the chemical that brings feelings of happiness. People exposed to sunlight, especially in the morning, are more likely to stay in a good mood throughout the day. Simply pulling back the curtains, finding a window or stepping outside to enjoy the sunshine can bring a smile to someone’s face. 

2. Get Up and Move

Exercise is another instant mood booster. Getting up and out of a chair and taking a quick walk helps the brain release endorphins. These make people feel satisfied and excited. Regular fitness is good for moods, and taking exercise outside makes it even more rewarding. Often, people who exercise outdoors are more energetic and happy. Sitting for hours without moving will put anyone in a bad mood, so get moving! 

3. Put on Some Music

Playing music helps improve mood and can bring a smile to anyone’s face. The right music can change attitudes, reduce stress and even lower blood pressure. Almost everyone has instant access to music, whether it’s through YouTube, downloaded songs on a phone, the radio or a streaming site. Most of these allow people to create playlists, meaning they can make one specifically to put them in a good mood. 

4. Be Thankful

When people are in a bad mood, it can be challenging to be thankful. However, thankfulness and gratitude are great ways to start feeling better fast. During the down times, simply thinking of something to be grateful for can lift spirits. It might be for family, good health, a job or even for the sun rising that morning. Over time, that person in a bad mood will change their heart and realize just how grateful they are. 

5. Notice the Positive

Similar to practicing gratitude, noticing positive things can make someone happy again. Training attention away from negative thoughts and into positive can improve overall happiness and well-being. It is okay to feel sad or have negative thoughts about something. For example, someone may lose their job, which is a significant event in their life and can bring on negativity. However,  that person can still be happy to have a good home and family to support them. 

6. Find a Way to Smile and Laugh

Whether through funny videos, a few corny jokes or forcing a smile, laughing and smiling can help improve a mood. Just a few seconds of laughter can change a person’s day from bad to good. Also, people can smile more when talking to others. This helps them seem more approachable, and the more people that talk with them, the higher their chances of being in a better mood.

7. Talk to a Loved One

Texting, calling or talking in-person to a friend or family member may be the solution to a bad mood. Hearing familiar voices brings a sense of comfort to people, and a quick conversation will help someone feel better. Additionally, planning a lunch date or a trip to the park with a loved one can give people something to look forward to at the end of a long, hard day, which boosts moods as well.

8. Take a Break from Screens

Being online or looking at screens all day can lead to fatigue and put some people in a funk. Nearly everything is online now, so more people are looking at screens for longer periods than ever before. Plus, with the pandemic, more kids are online for extended hours. Stepping away from screens will boost energy levels, which can also make someone feel happier. It also allows the mind to unwind and relax.
